CMPAC welcomes Canada’s recognition of the State of Palestine as an important step towards justice, dignity, and self-determination for the Palestinian people. For decades, Palestinians have endured occupation, dispossession, and repeated violations of international law. Recognition affirms their fundamental right to statehood; a right that does not hinge on negotiations with those actively undermining their existence.

Prime Ministers Mark Carney’s statement rightly acknowledges the destructive role of Israel’s government in entrenching illegal settlements, annexation, killing of thousands of Palestinians, and the devastating assault on Gaza.

CMPAC urges the Canadian government to avoid any political conditionality and to follow recognition with meaningful action: ending military trade with Israel, supporting accountability for war crimes through the International Criminal Court, and pushing for an immediate end to the siege on Gaza. Recognition is a first step but for Palestinians, freedom, justice, and the end of occupation remain the essential measures of peace.
